The Oporto British School (OBS), founded in 1894, is an independent British school for pupils aged 3-18. The school is located in the fashionable Porto suburb, Foz do Douro.
The OBS is a truly international school, with pupils from more than 30 nationalities. Today, there are around 525 pupils in the school, 60% of whom are from Portuguese families. There have been significant curriculum and campus developments over the past 5 years.
The OBS embraces all that is best in a top-quality British School and has a strong commitment to international education and the nurturing of international awareness, with special recognition of the School’s British roots operating in a Portuguese environment. There is a clear Vision and Ethos for the School. This is to sustain and develop an educational environment in which all individuals are committed to achieving excellence. Pupils embrace the ethos of "Knowledge, Vision, Humanity".
The school provides a disciplined, stimulating and friendly learning environment and develops strong moral and ethical values that enable its pupils to respond to the challenges provided by the demands of modern life.
In 2005, the OBS received accredited status by the Council of International Schools and was particularly commended for its warm and collegial atmosphere. The latest 5-year visit was in 2016 and we succeeded in being re-accredited once more. Since 2010, the School has been a Member of COBIS and in 2012 it was elected as an institutional member of the College of Teachers. In addition, it is a fully accredited member of the European Council of International Schools and the Independent Association of Prep Schools. The School is inspected by the ISI, with the last inspection in 2018 finding the School was 'good' across all areas.
The school has an experienced Senior Leadership Team and an active governing body.
