International schools in Brunei Darussalam

Search for the best international schools in Brunei Darussalam; you can find a list of selected schools at the bottom of this page. Use the search filters to select only girls' or boys' schools, prep schools, senior schools or sixth forms; or you can search for schools that offer a particular curriculum, such as the International Baccalaureate, the UK national curriculum, a US-style model or the International Primary Curriculum.

Education standards are high in the tiny, oil-rich state of Brunei, where GDP rose by 150 per cent from 2001 to 2021. The Muslim sultanate on the north coast of Borneo has the second-highest human development index in South East Asia and more than 30 per cent of school leavers went on to university or college in 2020.

Public schooling from age five to 18 is free for Brunei citizens but not available to foreign nationals. A private sector comprising 30 per cent of all schools caters for the large, culturally diverse community of expatriates working in the oil and gas industries and other businesses.

It includes two large, international schools, which are both close to the capital Bandar Seri Begawan. The International School Brunei and Jerudong International School offer modern, spacious campuses with boarding facilities, British and international curriculums and a strong suite of extra-curricular offerings.

Both are IB World Schools authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma, with ISB accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), while Jerudong International School is accredited by British Schools Overseas (BSO) and the Headmistress and Headmasters Conference (HMC).

Government schools and the two main universities in Brunei teach students through the medium of English, while Bruneian students are required to learn the official Malay language – Bahasa Melayu.  Most private schools teach in English, while also offering study of Bahasa Melayu, as well as foreign languages.

Brunei is a former British protectorate and British influence remains strong in education. The Brunei-Cambridge O-level is taken in many private schools, while others offer IGCSEs and A-levels. The private sector includes many missionary schools, both Catholic and Anglican, as well as Islamic schools that require study of Arabic and the Qur’an.
